The flow ingredient
Saw palmetto fruit, 84.5 mg
Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm from the south-eastern United States and the most widely used herb for prostate support. Clinical trials normally use 320 mg of a standardized extract a day. A large review of 27 trials concluded that saw palmetto alone makes little or no difference to urinary symptoms, although it is well tolerated. The amount here is about a quarter of the usual study dose.
The male vitality herbs
Chinese ginseng root, 120 mg
Panax ginseng is one of the most studied tonic herbs. There is some evidence that it supports erectile function, typically at higher doses than this. It may lower blood sugar and can cause sleeplessness in some people.
Epimedium sagittatum, 250 mg
Known as horny goat weed, this Chinese herb contains icariin. It has a long traditional use for reproductive health, but human studies are limited.
Damiana leaf, 200 mg, and muira puama root, 200 mg
Both are traditional South and Central American herbs associated with male drive. Research on either is sparse, so their reputation rests mainly on tradition.
Tribulus fruit, 120 mg, and catuaba bark, 84.5 mg
Tribulus is sold widely for testosterone and libido, though trials have been inconsistent. Catuaba is a Brazilian bark with mostly laboratory and animal data behind it.
The circulation ingredients
Hawthorn fruit, 250 mg
Hawthorn berries are a traditional European herb for the heart and circulation. Evidence is limited and mixed, and hawthorn can interact with heart medicines.
Ginkgo biloba leaf, 120 mg
Ginkgo is best known as a circulation and memory herb. Large trials have not confirmed clear benefits, and it may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners.
Cayenne fruit, 20 mg
A small amount of chili pepper, which contains capsaicin. It can cause heartburn in sensitive stomachs.
Niacin (vitamin B3), 75 mg
Niacin is an essential vitamin for energy metabolism. The adult male requirement is 16 mg a day and the upper limit from supplements is 35 mg, so this is a high dose. In its nicotinic acid form it commonly causes a temporary warm, red, tingling flush of the skin.
The remaining ingredients
Vitamin E, 13 mg
An antioxidant vitamin supplied at slightly under the daily requirement. A large trial found that high-dose vitamin E did not protect the prostate, so it should be viewed simply as a nutrient here.
Inosine, 50 mg, and oat straw, 32 mg
Inosine is a compound the body converts into uric acid; it has no established benefit and can aggravate gout. Oat straw is the green stalk of the oat plant, included in a small amount.
What the label tells you
The strength of this label is transparency: every amount is shown. Its weakness is that the prostate-specific ingredient is modestly dosed while the niacin is high. For tolerability, see ProtoFlow side effects. For realistic expectations, see does ProtoFlow work?
